Code of Conduct for Driving Instructors


Tuition Vehicle

  • Ensure that the vehicle is maintained in a clean, tidy, undamaged and roadworthy condition.
  • Not allow passengers in the vehicle during tuition, except Interpreters and DSA Officials unless requested by the pupil.
  • Mobile telephone calls or text messages should not be made or received during lessons.

Personal Conduct

  • Always maintain a polite, professional and respectful attitude towards pupils and other road users.
  • Avoid physical contact with a pupil except in an emergency or in the normal course of greeting.
  • Not impair instructional effectiveness through alcohol/drug abuse or excessive working hours.

Business Dealings

  • All new Pupils should be contacted prior to their first lesson, to confirm licence details, lesson time, date and duration, payment details and correct pick up point.
  • Check the pupil's entitlement to drive the vehicle and ability to read a number plate at the statutory distance on the first lesson.
  • Ensure all pupils sign and accept the Instructors Terms and Conditions of Trade.
  • Every effort should be made to meet lesson times and durations.
  • Instructors should contact pupils by telephone, giving maximum notice, whenever difficulties occur offering such compensation as may be determined by the Instructors Terms and Conditions of Trade.
  • Instructors will safeguard and account for any monies paid in advance by the pupil in respect of driving lessons, test fees or for any other purpose and will make details available to the pupil on request.
  • Provide systematic tuition in accordance with the appropriate syllabus.
  • Instructors will advise pupils when to apply for their theory and practical driving tests, taking account of local waiting times and forecast of pupil's potential for achieving test pass standard.
  • Instructors will not cancel or re-arrange a driving test without the pupil's agreement.
  • In the event of the instructor's decision to withhold the use of the tuition vehicle for the driving test, sufficient notice should be given to avoid loss of the DSA test fee where possible.
  • When presenting a pupil for the practical driving test ensure that the pupil has all the necessary documentation to enable the pupil to take the test and that the vehicle is roadworthy.
